Ferro molybdenum ( Ferro moly ) is a specialized alloy composed primarily of iron (Fe) and molybdenum (Mo). This high-performance material is crafted by melting a blend of iron and molybdenum sources, such as ferrosilicon and industrial-grade molybdenum oxide, in a furnace. The resulting alloy is enriched with molybdenum, typically ranging between50% and 75% . Importantly, ferromolybdenum is classified as a non-hazardous material for transportation.
Ferro molybdenum serves as a crucial additive in steelmaking and cast iron production. Its incorporation is aimed at significantly enhancing the hardenability, strength, and corrosion resistance of the final metal products. The addition of molybdenum imparts high-temperature stability, making it indispensable for applications across various industries including automotive, construction, petroleum, and natural gas.

Ferro molybdenum is generally smelted using the efficient metal thermal method.
The primary raw material for smelting ferro molybdenum is molybdenite (MoS2). Before smelting, molybdenum concentrate undergoes oxidative roasting in a multi-hearth furnace, resulting in roasted molybdenum concentrate with a sulfur content reduced to less than 0.07%.
The process of smelting ferro molybdenum predominantly employs an external furnace method. This sophisticated furnace, a cylindrical marvel resting on a sand base, is meticulously lined with clay bricks. The charge consists of ferrosilicon with a high purity of 75% silicon and a small blend of aluminum granules serving as a reducing agent. The smelting process initiates with a top ignition technique: an igniter, such as saltpeter, aluminum or magnesium shavings, is strategically applied to the charge's surface, igniting it intensely. This is followed by a tranquil period, slag tapping, and careful removal of the furnace cylinder. The resulting ferro molybdenum ingots are initially cooled in a sand pit, subsequently water-cooled in a dedicated cooling chamber, and finally crushed and refined to perfection. The metal recovery rates are impressively high, ranging from 92% to 99%. In recent advancements, oxygen molybdenum briquettes have emerged as a popular alternative to ferro molybdenum in the dynamic steelmaking industry.
Ferromolybdenum is an indispensable additive in the production of steel and corrosion-resistant alloys, ensuring superior quality and performance.
Ferro molybdenum, an alloy of molybdenum and iron, primarily serves as a molybdenum additive in steelmaking. Its inclusion in steel promotes a uniform fine-grained structure and enhances hardenability, effectively eliminating temper embrittlement. In high-speed steels, molybdenum can partially substitute tungsten. Combined with other alloying elements, molybdenum finds extensive use in producing stainless steel, heat-resistant steel, acid-resistant steel, and tool steel, as well as in alloys with unique physical properties. Incorporating molybdenum into cast iron significantly boosts its strength and wear resistance.
The primary use of ferro molybdenum lies in the production of iron alloys, dictated by its molybdenum content and range. This indispensable additive is key to manufacturing machine tools and equipment, military hardware, refinery oil pipes, load-bearing components, and rotary drills. Its applications further extend to automobiles, trucks, locomotives, ships, and more. Ferro molybdenum is also vital in producing stainless steel and heat-resistant steel, crucial for synthetic fuel and chemical plants, heat exchangers, generators, refinery equipment, pumps, turbine pipes, ship propellers, and storage containers for plastics and acids. In tool steels, a high proportion of ferro molybdenum significantly boosts performance in high-speed machining parts, cold-working tools, drills, screwdrivers, molds, chisels, heavy castings, balls and rolling mills, rollers, cylinder blocks, and piston rings.
In April, the price of stainless steel 316 rose significantly, spurring end buyers' enthusiasm and leading to a surge in demand for ferro molybdenum. This increased confidence has impacted upstream, causing the price of molybdenum concentrate to climb, thereby raising costs. Concurrently, ferro molybdenum factories, buoyed by ample orders, are reluctant to sell at lower prices. Consequently, the transaction price of ferro molybdenum is steadily rising, with current bidding prices nearing 220,000 yuan per ton. Spot transactions are occurring sporadically at 219,000 to 220,000 yuan per ton. Projections indicate a slight price increase next month.
