Silicon manganese alloy is a remarkable fusion of manganese, silicon, iron, and minimal carbon along with other elements. It shines as a widely utilized iron alloy, boasting a significant production volume. Notably, it ranks second in consumption among electric furnace ferroalloy products. The manganese and silicon components exhibit a potent affinity for oxygen. When deployed in steelmaking, silicon manganese alloy forms deoxidation products, namely mnsio3 and mn2sio4, with melting points of 1270 ºC and 1327 ºC, respectively. This alloy is favored for its low melting point, large particle size, ease of flotation, and superior deoxidation capabilities. Remarkably, when deoxidized separately, the burn loss rates for manganese and silicon are 46% and 37%, respectively, but drop to 29% when using silicon manganese alloy. This alloy is crafted in a submerged arc furnace by reducing manganese ore, manganese-rich slag, manganese oxide, and silicon dioxide in silica simultaneously with carbon.
