Silicon manganese alloy is a sophisticated blend of manganese, silicon, iron, and carbon, among other elements, forming an iron alloy of remarkable versatility and robust production output. Notably, it ranks second in consumption amongst electric furnace ferroalloy products. The manganese and silicon components exhibit a profound affinity with oxygen, making the alloy highly effective in steelmaking. This is evidenced by the deoxidation products, MnSiO3 and Mn2SiO4, which boast melting points of 1270 ºC and 1327 ºC respectively, offering the advantages of a low melting point, substantial particle size, effortless flotation, and superior deoxidation capacity. Under identical conditions, the separate deoxidization of manganese or silicon results in a burn-loss rate of 46% and 37%, respectively, while the manganese silicon alloy achieves a reduced rate of 29%. Production involves the simultaneous reduction of manganese ore (including manganese-rich slag) and manganese oxide and silicon dioxide in silica using carbon in a submerged arc furnace.
