Ferro molybdenum ( Ferro moly ) is a high-performance alloy primarily composed of iron (Fe) and molybdenum (Mo). This alloy is meticulously crafted by melting iron and molybdenum sources-typically ferrosilicon and industrial-grade molybdenum oxide-together in a furnace. The resultant alloy generally boasts a molybdenum content in the range of50% to 75% . Notably, Ferromolybdenum is classified as non-hazardous for transportation purposes.
Ferro molybdenum is widely cherished as a crucial additive in the realms of steelmaking and cast iron production. Its inclusion is meticulously aimed at significantly augmenting the hardenability, strength, and corrosion resistance of the final metal products. The presence of molybdenum in the alloy elevates its capacity to endure high temperatures, rendering it indispensable for applications across diverse industries such as automotive, construction, petroleum, and natural gas.

Ferro molybdenum is typically smelted utilizing the highly efficient metal thermal method.
The primary raw material for smelting ferro molybdenum is molybdenite (MoS2). Prior to smelting, molybdenum concentrate is generally subjected to oxidative roasting in a multi-hearth furnace, yielding roasted molybdenum concentrate with a sulfur content below 0.07%.
The production of ferro molybdenum employs an advanced external furnace method. This sophisticated furnace, a cylindrical design set on a sand base, features a lining of clay bricks, ensuring optimal performance. The raw materials introduced include ferrosilicon with a 75% silicon content and a small quantity of aluminum granules, serving as a potent reducing agent. The smelting process initiates with a top ignition approach: an igniter (such as saltpeter, aluminum shavings, or magnesium shavings) is applied to the charge surface, resulting in a vigorous ignition. This is followed by a period of quiescence, strategic slag tapping, and the eventual removal of the furnace cylinder. The resulting ferro molybdenum ingots undergo initial cooling in a sand pit, followed by water-cooling in a specialized cooling chamber, and ultimately, they are crushed and refined to perfection. Metal recovery rates are exceptionally high, ranging between 92% to 99%. In recent years, oxygen molybdenum briquettes have become a favored alternative to ferro molybdenum in the steelmaking industry, showcasing their growing prominence.
Ferromolybdenum is an indispensable additive in the manufacture of superior steel and corrosion-resistant alloys, enhancing their properties significantly.
Ferro molybdenum, an alloy composed of molybdenum and iron, is predominantly utilized as a molybdenum additive in steelmaking. Its integration into steel promotes a uniform fine-grained structure and enhances hardenability, while also aiding in the elimination of temper embrittlement. In high-speed steels, molybdenum can serve as a partial substitute for tungsten. When alloyed with other elements, molybdenum is extensively employed in crafting stainless steels, heat-resistant steels, acid-resistant steels, and tool steels, along with alloys with specialized physical properties. Its addition to cast iron significantly boosts strength and wear resistance.
The predominant use of ferro molybdenum is in the crafting of superior iron alloys, thanks to its rich molybdenum content and versatile range. This exceptional additive is indispensable in the manufacturing of machine tools and machinery, military hardware, refinery oil pipes, load-bearing components, and rotary drills. Its applications extend to automobiles, trucks, locomotives, ships, and more. Additionally, ferro molybdenum plays a pivotal role in producing stainless and heat-resistant steel, crucial for synthetic fuel and chemical plants, heat exchangers, generators, refinery equipment, pumps, turbine pipes, ship propellers, and storage containers for plastics and acids. In tool steels, a high proportion of ferro molybdenum dramatically enhances performance in high-speed machining parts, cold-working tools, drills, screwdrivers, molds, chisels, heavy castings, balls and rolling mills, rollers, cylinder blocks, and piston rings.
In April, a notable surge in stainless steel 316 prices ignited end-buyer enthusiasm, leading to a dramatic increase in demand for ferro molybdenum. This renewed confidence has rippled upstream, causing molybdenum concentrate prices to climb, thereby increasing overall costs. Concurrently, ferro molybdenum factories, buoyed by a plethora of orders, are reluctant to sell at lower prices. As a result, the transaction price of ferro molybdenum is on a steady incline, with the current bidding price approaching 220,000 yuan per ton. Spot transactions are sporadically occurring at 219,000 to 220,000 yuan per ton. Projections suggest a slight price increase in the upcoming month.
