Ferro-Chrome with less than 56% chromium is termed 'charge chrome' and is derived from ores with lower chrome content. Conversely, High Carbon Ferro-Chrome, obtained from higher-grade ores, is favored in specialized fields such as engineering steels, where a high Cr to Fe ratio and minimal impurities (sulfur, phosphorus, titanium) are crucial.

In steel production, Low-Carbon Ferro-Chrome is vital for adjusting chromium levels without altering carbon or trace element balances. It serves as a cost-effective substitute for metallic chrome in super alloys and other specialized melting applications.
