Silicon manganese alloy is a premium fusion of manganese, silicon, iron, along with trace amounts of carbon and other elements, forming a versatile iron alloy that ranks second in consumption among ferroalloy products in electric furnace industries. The elements manganese and silicon in this alloy possess a powerful affinity for oxygen, making it an exceptional choice for steelmaking. When involved in steel production, the deoxidation byproducts mnsio3 and mn2sio4 boast melting points of 1270 ºC and 1327 ºC respectively. This ensures advantages like a low melting point, sizeable particles, ease of floating, and superior deoxidation capacity. Remarkably, the oxidation loss rates when deoxidizing with manganese alone or silicon alone are 46% and 37%, whereas using silicon manganese alloy reduces it significantly to 29%. The production process involves reducing manganese ore (including its rich slag), manganese oxide, and silicon dioxide in silica simultaneously with carbon in a submerged arc furnace.
