Product Description

Ferro molybdenum ( Ferro moly ) is a specialized alloy predominantly composed of iron (Fe) and molybdenum (Mo). This high-quality alloy is meticulously produced by melting iron and molybdenum sources-commonly ferrosilicon and industrial-grade molybdenum oxide-in a furnace. The resulting alloy frequently boasts a molybdenum content ranging from50% to 75% . Importantly, ferro molybdenum is not considered hazardous for transportation purposes.

Ferro molybdenum is a crucial additive in the steelmaking and cast iron production industries. When integrated, it significantly enhances the hardenability, strength, and corrosion resistance of final metal products. The molybdenum content in the alloy allows it to withstand high temperatures, making it ideal for demanding applications across automotive, construction, petroleum, and natural gas industries.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Ferro Molybdenum
  • Atomic weight of Molybdenum (Mo) : 95.94. Outer electron configuration: 4d5s. Melting point: 2615°C. Boiling point: 4610°C. Density (at 20°C): 10.2g/cm³.
  • Solid Solutions and Intermetallic Compounds : Molybdenum forms both α and γ solid solutions with iron, and two intermetallic compounds, ε (Fe7Mo6) and σ (FeMo).
  • Composition : Industrial-grade ferro molybdenum typically contains around 60% Mo, with a melting temperature range between 1800 and 1900°C, and a density of roughly 9.0g/cm³.
  • Role in Steel : Ferro molybdenum significantly enhances hardenability, thermal strength, resistance to temper embrittlement, residual magnetism, coercivity, and resistance to corrosive media, notably preventing pitting. It is extensively utilized in various steel types, including structural, spring, bearing, tool, stainless acid-resistant, heat-resistant, and magnetic steels.
  • Role in Cast Iron : Ferro molybdenum notably improves the strength and toughness of cast iron. When added in quantities ranging from 0.25% to 1.25%, it can form a pearlitic matrix structure in castings with medium to large sections. It is particularly beneficial in rolls and other wear-resistant castings.

Smelting Method for Ferro Molybdenum

Ferro molybdenum is typically produced via the highly efficient metal thermal method.
The primary raw material for smelting ferro molybdenum is molybdenite (MoS2). Before smelting, molybdenum concentrate typically undergoes oxidative roasting in a multi-hearth furnace, resulting in roasted molybdenum concentrate with a sulfur content of less than 0.07%.
The smelting of ferro molybdenum typically utilizes an external furnace method. This furnace, a cylindrical structure placed on a sand base, is lined with clay bricks. The charge added comprises ferrosilicon containing 75% silicon and a small amount of aluminum granules as a reducing agent. Smelting begins with a top ignition method: an igniter (such as saltpeter, aluminum shavings, or magnesium shavings) is applied to the charge's surface, igniting vigorously. This is followed by a period of quiescence, slag tapping, and removal of the furnace cylinder. The ferro molybdenum ingots are initially cooled in a sand pit, then water-cooled in a cooling chamber, and finally crushed and refined. Metal recovery rates range from 92% to 99%. In recent years, oxygen molybdenum briquettes have become a popular substitute for ferro molybdenum in the steelmaking industry.

Advantages of Ferro Molybdenum (FeMo) Alloy

Ferromolybdenum is a critical additive in the creation of steel and corrosion-resistant alloys.

  • Enhanced hardenability, offering improved performance.
  • Superior high-temperature strength and exceptional creep resistance.
  • Significantly increased corrosion resistance, particularly in stainless steel.
  • Effective reduction of temper embrittlement, ensuring durability.
  • Resistance to temper softening, maintaining structural integrity.
  • Improved weldability, facilitating smoother manufacturing processes.

Ferro molybdenum uses

Ferro molybdenum, an alloy of molybdenum and iron, serves primarily as a molybdenum additive in steelmaking. Its addition to steel fosters a uniform fine-grained structure and enhances hardenability, aiding in eliminating temper embrittlement. In high-speed steels, molybdenum can partially replace tungsten. When combined with other alloying elements, molybdenum is extensively used in producing stainless steel, heat-resistant steel, acid-resistant steel, and tool steel, as well as in alloys possessing special physical properties. Incorporating molybdenum into cast iron enhances its strength and wear resistance.

  1. Steel Industry: Ferro molybdenum is an essential additive in manufacturing high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel. Its wide-ranging applications include structural steel, automotive components, and machinery. Ferro molybdenum boosts steel's toughness, hardenability, and corrosion resistance, making it ideal for high-stress applications.
  2. Aerospace Industry: Owing to its high-temperature resistance and robust strength characteristics, ferro molybdenum is utilized in the aerospace industry for producing jet engine components, such as turbine blades.
  3. Chemical Industry: Ferro molybdenum functions as a catalyst in numerous chemical reactions, including the production of formaldehyde and acetic acid.
  4. Electrical Industry: Owing to its high melting point and excellent thermal conductivity, ferro molybdenum is employed in manufacturing high-temperature electrical components, such as heating elements and filaments.
  5. Metallurgical Industry: Ferro molybdenum is vital in producing other molybdenum-based alloys, such as molybdenum-tungsten alloys and molybdenum-copper alloys.

The predominant use of ferro molybdenum lies in the production of iron alloys, determined by its molybdenum content and range. This versatile additive is indispensable for manufacturing machine tools and equipment, military hardware, refinery oil pipes, load-bearing components, and rotary drills. Moreover, its applications extend to automobiles, trucks, locomotives, ships, and more. Ferro molybdenum also plays a crucial role in producing stainless steel and heat-resistant steel, essential for synthetic fuel and chemical plants, heat exchangers, generators, refinery equipment, pumps, turbine pipes, ship propellers, and storage containers for plastics and acids. In tool steels, a high proportion of ferro molybdenum enhances performance in high-speed machining parts, cold-working tools, drills, screwdrivers, molds, chisels, heavy castings, balls and rolling mills, rollers, cylinder blocks, and piston rings.

Ferro Molybdenum Price - HSferroalloy

In April, a significant rise in the price of stainless steel 316 spurred the enthusiasm of end buyers, leading to a surge in demand for ferro molybdenum. This heightened confidence has been transmitted upstream, with the price of molybdenum concentrate continuing to climb, thereby increasing costs. Concurrently, ferro molybdenum factories, buoyed by ample orders, are disinclined to sell at lower prices. Consequently, the transaction price of ferro molybdenum is steadily rising, with the current bidding price approaching 220,000 yuan per ton. Spot transactions are sporadically occurring at 219,000 to 220,000 yuan per ton. Projections indicate a slight price increase next month.
