Silicon manganese alloy is a highly versatile iron alloy, composed of manganese, silicon, iron, and trace amounts of carbon, among other elements. It ranks as the second most consumed ferroalloy in electric furnace processes. This alloy boasts a potent affinity with oxygen thanks to its manganese and silicon components. In steelmaking, the deoxidation process involves producing mnsio3 and mn2sio4, with melting points at 1270 ºC and 1327 ºC respectively. Notable for its low melting point, large particle size, ease of flotation, and superior deoxidation effectiveness, silicon manganese alloy is indispensable. When compared under similar conditions, the burn-off rates for manganese and silicon when deoxidized separately are 46% and 37%, respectively, whereas silicon manganese alloy achieves a significantly lower rate of 29%. The production process involves the simultaneous reduction of manganese ore (including manganese-rich slag), manganese oxide, and silicon dioxide with carbon in a submerged arc furnace.
